Melinda Messenger Embraces Natural Grey Hair, Citing Freedom and Joy

Melinda Messenger, 55, has shared a striking selfie on social media, showcasing her natural grey hair and discussing her embrace of her authentic look. The presenter, who gained fame in the Nineties, revealed on Saturday that she has found "real freedom and joy" in letting her hair go au naturel.

In her post, Messenger explained that while she understands not everyone chooses to embrace their natural color, her own experience with the grey grow-out process has been positive. She noted that her hair has never felt healthier and that she has overcome the societal pressure on women regarding aging and beauty standards. "That and not buying into the conditioning that women are not allowed to age and that beauty is confined to the expectations of those that profit from it," she stated. Messenger added that there are no strict rules for women and that whatever feels right for them is acceptable. She emphasized that her current choice feels good for her, stating, "There’s nothing wrong with colouring your hair, embracing your grey, changing your mind or doing whatever makes you feel good. And this feels good for me." Messenger's decision to embrace her grey hair follows an incident approximately a year prior, when she claimed she was removed from hosting the Miss South Yorkshire beauty pageant due to her appearance, specifically having gone "too grey." The mother of three, who is now a psychotherapist, was slated to host the 2025 Miss South Yorkshire Grand Finale. However, she later clarified on Instagram that she would not be attending, as organizers had withdrawn her from the lineup without public notification.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Messenger revealed that concerns about her appearance, including her grey hair and recent social media posts exploring spiritual phenomena, contributed to her being dropped from the pageant. A request to reduce her hosting fee was also mentioned. Despite the disappointment, she reiterated her commitment to authenticity and openness.

The former glamour model transitioned to her natural grey look in 2022, a change that was met with some negative comments from online trolls who described the look as "disgusting" and "old." Messenger, known for her television work on shows like "Live From Studio Five" and "Cowboy Builders," has increasingly focused on personal development and spiritual wellness in recent years, exploring themes of meditation, consciousness, and energy, which she believes may have unsettled pageant organizers.
