A handwritten note expressing sorrow over escalating youth gang violence was left at the scene where a 15-year-old boy died from stab wounds in Melbourne, Australia. The note, found near where Darweish Mohamed was fatally attacked, questioned, "When will these postcode wars end."
A 16-year-old has since been arrested and charged with murder in connection with Mohamed's death. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening outside Craigieburn Community Hospital on Lygon Drive.
According to reports from a local true crime website, Mohamed had agreed to a one-on-one fight but was allegedly ambushed by a group of up to 14 youths. He was found on the pavement with a hunting knife discovered nearby. Mohamed was a student at Mount Ridley P–12 College in Craigieburn.
"The death of the young person in a violent incident (on Wednesday) night will be extremely distressing for the local communities involved," a spokesman for the Department of Education stated. The department confirmed it would provide support to affected school communities.
"Another senseless tragic life taken far too soon. RIP dude. Love and thoughts are with your family and friends," read part of the note left at the scene, alongside flowers. Friends also shared tributes, with one writing, "Can't believe this, until we meet again. Crazy how fast things can happen."
Melbourne's "postcode wars," characterized by violent clashes between rival youth gangs, have been fueling territorial disputes in the city's outer suburbs. The note's message directly addressed this phenomenon, highlighting the tragic consequences of these ongoing conflicts.
Police have made multiple arrests as part of their investigation. The 16-year-old charged with murder is from the Goulburn Valley region and has been remanded in custody. A 20-year-old man was charged with criminal damage by fire and bailed. Additionally, a 15-year-old girl was arrested and charged with affray and theft of a motor vehicle, and subsequently bailed. Another 15-year-old boy is in custody for questioning.
A GoFundMe page established to assist Mohamed's family with funeral costs had raised over $35,000 from nearly 1,000 donors as of Friday morning. The page's message expressed solidarity, stating, "No family should ever have to go through a loss like this, and our hearts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."
