Melbourne Mansion With Million-Dollar Backyard Lists for $3.5 Million

A six-bedroom, three-bathroom mansion in Melbourne's Lysterfield has been listed for $3.5 million, with its meticulously designed backyard being the standout feature. The property, located at 3 Obeah Court in the exclusive Carrington Estate, sits on 5,000 square meters of land and boasts an elaborate garden that owners estimate would cost $1 million to replicate today.

The backyard was designed by acclaimed landscape architect Scott Wynd, who was involved in creating a gold medal-winning garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. The nine-month landscaping project, completed in 2012, involved planting 700 trees, shrubs, and bushes across the tiered grounds. The mature garden now features multiple viewing platforms, secluded seating areas, and an elevated swimming pool, with carefully positioned lighting enhancing its ambiance after dark.

"It's just stunning. It's one of the absolute best features of the house," said Ben Thomas, an agent with Ray White Ferntree Gully. "As you look out every single window, you've just got beautiful views of those established gardens."

The interiors of the 64-square meter residence are equally impressive, designed for both entertaining and family living. The home includes four separate living areas, a home theatre, a private study, and two log fireplaces. Distinctive sandstone walls, quarried from the property itself and laid by hand, create a seamless connection between the indoors and the surrounding landscape.

The contemporary kitchen features an oversized stone island benchtop, glass splashback, ample storage, and a walk-in butler's pantry. High-end appliances include a Smeg gas cooktop, double oven, and a Miele dishwasher. Large windows in the kitchen offer views of the gardens, with adjoining living spaces flowing out to outdoor entertaining areas.

The master bedroom is situated in its own private wing, complete with a separate retreat, a walk-in wardrobe, and a luxurious ensuite with a double stone vanity and rainfall shower. A self-contained wing at the rear of the property provides additional accommodation for guests, including its own entrance, garage, bedroom, living space, and bathroom with a spa bath.

Outside, the property offers four distinct entertaining zones in addition to the solar-heated swimming pool. The Carrington Estate is known for its privacy and large blocks, attracting affluent residents, including the family of Formula One driver Oscar Piastri.

Despite significant interest, the property did not meet its reserve price at a recent auction. Negotiations are ongoing with several parties, and the asking price has been adjusted to $3.525 million.
