A Melbourne couple's lives were significantly impacted following a January drug raid, with charges against Natalie Cockburn ultimately withdrawn, while her husband, Darren Tennent, continues to face drug trafficking allegations. The couple, who were arrested at their Mount Waverley unit on January 21, were prohibited from contacting each other due to bail conditions.
Tennent, 42, faces charges including trafficking ecstasy. Authorities allege that during the raid, officers discovered multiple bags of ecstasy tablets totaling 414 grams, along with cocaine, 60 vials of steroids, other substances, and ziplock bags commonly used for drug distribution. A search warrant also led to the seizure of approximately $10,120 in cash, believed to be the proceeds of crime, and a counterfeit Rolex watch found in a safe.
Adding to the investigation, detectives reportedly seized $45,000 in cash on February 20 from a second property associated with Ms. Cockburn in Rosebud, on the Mornington Peninsula. Tennent, who was questioned by police on February 21, reportedly provided a "no comment" interview regarding this cash.
During a court appearance on Thursday, Magistrate David Barrese noted the quantity of ecstasy found, which was just under the threshold for commercial trafficking. Prosecutors allege the seized cash is connected to Tennent's alleged drug dealing, a claim the defense contests, asserting the cash and watch are not proceeds of crime. The defense also highlighted Tennent's claim of a law-abiding life for the past two decades and his employment history.
Ms. Cockburn was initially charged with 29 offenses alongside her husband. However, all charges against her were dropped last month. She had relocated to Queensland while her case was pending and was only cleared to communicate with Tennent again after her charges were dismissed. The court heard that their communication has only recently resumed.
Tennent, who spent 42 days in custody, had his bail extended to appear in court again on September 8. While he still faces charges of trafficking heroin and ecstasy, these are expected to be struck out at the next hearing. His social media activity prior to the arrest, including posts from Thailand, reportedly depicted a lavish lifestyle.
