Melania Trump's Xi State Dinner Outfit Celebrated as Tribute to Chinese Culture

First lady Melania Trump garnered significant attention for her attire during the White House state dinner honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan. Trump hosted the lavish event alongside President Donald Trump on Thursday night.

Melania Trump’s ensemble featured a white bow blouse by Saint Laurent paired with black tuxedo-inspired pants adorned with a subtle peony pattern from Dolce & Gabbana. She completed the look with a black silk cummerbund and black Christian Louboutin heels. The choice of the peony, known in Chinese culture as the "King of Flowers," was widely interpreted as a deliberate tribute to Chinese heritage, symbolizing wealth, nobility, prosperity, and beauty.

This choice followed a pattern of menswear-inspired looks for the first lady. Earlier that day, she wore a black Alexander McQueen military-style suit for the official welcoming ceremony for the Chinese delegation. Last year, she donned a Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo suit for her official White House portrait.

Madame Peng Liyuan, in contrast, wore a deep red gown with a black clutch featuring a gold clasp. The two first ladies appeared to interact warmly during the visit.

The two women visited the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, where they were serenaded by students from the Hope Chinese School. Peng Liyuan, a former singer in China, reportedly bopped her head and sang along. They also viewed the museum's famed Peacock Room.

At the head table for the state dinner were Apple CEO Tim Cook, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and his wife Lori, and Advanced Micro Devices CEO Dr. Lisa Su and her husband Daniel Lin.

Melania Trump was reportedly involved in overseeing all details of the dinner, including the crimson tablecloths, floral centerpieces featuring dahlias and ranunculus, and the predominantly seafood menu. During the dinner, she was observed toasting President Xi.
