Melania Trump Negotiates Localized Ceasefire in Ukraine

First Lady Melania Trump has brokered a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, enabling the evacuation of elderly residents from the city of Oleshky. The White House announced Friday that the First Lady persuaded both nations to temporarily halt military actions to facilitate safe civilian passage.

The ceasefire is scheduled to commence on October 29.

"The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster," the First Lady stated. "Oleshky's remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water."

She added, "Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine."

Oleshky was captured by Russian forces on the initial day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then, the city has faced dwindling resources, with reports indicating scarce food and medical supplies for months. Residents have also been without electricity, heat, and running water.

In June 2023, hundreds were killed when the Kakhovka Dam collapsed following an explosion, which the Associated Press determined was likely caused by the Russian military.

Melania Trump, who was born in Slovenia, has previously engaged in efforts to reunite Ukrainian children with their parents who were taken by Russian forces. In August of the previous year, she personally wrote to Russian President Vladimir Putin, with her letter delivered by former President Donald Trump during his summit with Putin in Anchorage, Alaska.
