First Lady Melania Trump attended the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, marking her second public appearance alongside President Donald Trump in a week. The couple was observed in the presidential motorcade and took honorary laps around the track before the IndyCar race.
This outing follows the First Lady's event in the White House Rose Garden earlier in the week, where she announced a new initiative aimed at expanding scholarship opportunities for young people aging out of the foster care system. The program, called "Fostering the Future," includes funding for educational programs at Indiana University and Purdue University.
"Fostering the Future graduates will build new companies, launch new industries, and redefine what is possible for all Americans," Melania Trump stated at the Rose Garden event. She described the initiative as "a generational investment in America's talents pipeline."
Earlier on July 19, the First Lady had appeared with the President at the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, her first public appearance with him in over a month. Her remarks at the Rose Garden event, which she began by saying, "I heard you missed me. Here I am," were her first public statement in over a month.
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix was hosted by IndyCar as part of the yearlong celebration of the nation's semiquincentennial birthday. Over 140,000 fans were expected to attend the event.
International motorsport officials acknowledged the significance of the race. H.E. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA, stated that the event combined the nation's 250th anniversary with a sport known for innovation and speed. Ronan Morgan, president of the FIA Drivers' Commission, also praised the race as a tribute to America's motorsport legacy.
