Melania Trump Helps Broker Ceasefire for Ukrainian City Aid
A localized truce around Oleshky will allow humanitarian aid to enter and residents to evacuate.
Former first lady Melania Trump played a key role in brokering a localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in southern Ukraine, facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid and the potential evacuation of residents.
Negotiators from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States reached an agreement on Friday for a temporary pause in fighting around Oleshky, a city in the Kherson region that has been cut off for months. Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, who led Ukraine's negotiating team, confirmed the deal and outlined a three-stage process: a ceasefire, followed by the delivery of humanitarian aid, and then the evacuation of civilians who wish to leave.
According to Lubinets, mines along the routes into Oleshky will be cleared before any aid can be delivered. Russia's human rights ombudswoman, Yana Lantratova, who participated in the talks, stated that the initial step will involve assessing the needs of the residents and subsequently delivering essential supplies like food, medicine, and hygiene products. She assured that safe passage would be guaranteed for anyone wishing to depart the combat zone.
The ceasefire is scheduled to commence on Tuesday at 3 a.m. Kyiv time, with the humanitarian mission beginning two days later. The pause is expected to last several days and will extend across the Kherson region and adjacent areas crucial for the operation. Russian General Valery Gerasimov announced that Russian forces would halt firing on the Kherson axis starting at 4 a.m. Tuesday Moscow time, also stating that Russian forces would conduct engineering reconnaissance to ensure the safe passage of humanitarian convoys.
Oleshky, situated on the Dnipro River, was captured by Russian forces on the first day of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The city, which previously had a population of approximately 24,000, has been severely damaged by shelling and experienced widespread flooding in June 2023 after the Kakhovka Dam collapsed. Residents have faced severe shortages of food, medical supplies, electricity, heat, and running water. Roads are reportedly mined, and drones are a constant presence overhead.
Melania Trump's involvement began in September after she learned of the situation in Oleshky during an event at the U.N. General Assembly. She and a representative then engaged directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to establish the terms of the ceasefire. This effort aligns with her focus on the well-being of children in conflict zones, an issue she has championed during her husband's time in the White House, including hosting a U.N. Security Council meeting on the topic and writing to Russian President Vladimir Putin about reuniting families with children displaced by the war. Her senior adviser indicated she has assisted in reuniting nearly three dozen children.
The development comes amid increased tensions between the Trump administration and Ukraine's government, with reported restrictions on Ukraine's satellite internet system and mixed messages from U.S. officials regarding its throttling. Former President Donald Trump has also recently waived new Russia sanctions, agreed to the import of diesel fuel from Russia, and urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to negotiate an end to the war. Trump envoy Steve Witkoff recently traveled to Norway for discussions with Zelenskyy before meeting Putin in Russia as part of renewed efforts to revive the peace process.
