Melania Trump's office announced that a fifth group of Ukrainian children, abducted by Russia, has been reunited with their families. The initiative, which began in October 2025, has now facilitated the return of approximately 30 children to their homes.

"Every reunion is a reminder that compassion, dignity, and family can transcend even the darkest of times: war," Melania Trump stated. "My representative and I continue working with the governments of Russia and Ukraine to safely return children to their families and communities."

The program officially commenced after President Donald Trump delivered a note from the former first lady to Russian President Vladimir Putin during their August 2025 summit in Alaska. The White House has characterized the effort as a humanitarian mission that places children's well-being above international disputes.

"The first lady’s leadership has bridged political divides in pursuit of a singular humanitarian mission: placing the well-being of children above conflict and helping restore families torn apart by war," the White House said in a news release. The recent reunions are the first to occur since April.

Melania Trump has previously expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as first lady and highlighted the importance of collaboration. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve as first lady but understand that my persistence alone is not enough," she said in an April 23 speech. "Together we can change people's lives for the better."

Thousands of civilians, including children, have been killed since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with the United Nations reporting last year as the deadliest since the war's commencement.
