Melania Trump Facilitates Ceasefire in Ukrainian City of Oleshky

A ceasefire has begun in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, a development confirmed by Ukraine's parliament commissioner for human rights, Dmytro Lubinets. The truce was facilitated by former first lady Melania Trump, according to the White House.

Lubinets stated on social media that the Ukrainian side is honoring its commitments. Oleshky, located in the Kherson region, was seized by Russian forces in the early days of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Before the conflict, the city was home to 24,000 residents, but estimates now suggest around 6,000 people, including 200 children, remain trapped between Ukrainian positions across the Dnipro River and Russian forces to the east.

The ceasefire is intended to permit the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians from the embattled city. Melania Trump's office issued a press release stating that non-military, civilian leaders from both countries will collaborate to assess the needs of Oleshky residents. While often maintaining a lower public profile than some predecessors, the former first lady has engaged in addressing humanitarian issues stemming from the Russia-Ukraine war. In August 2025, she previously wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to prioritize the protection of children and future generations.
