Melania Trump Brokers Localized Ceasefire in Ukraine
First Lady announces agreement for humanitarian aid and civilian evacuation in Oleshky, beginning October 29.
First Lady Melania Trump announced Friday that she has brokered a localized, temporary ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, scheduled to begin on October 29. The agreement, which has received cooperation from both Russia and Ukraine, is intended to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid and the establishment of a safe passageway for civilian evacuation.
A statement from the First Lady's office described the situation in Oleshky as dire, noting that the remaining population consists primarily of elderly residents in urgent need of medical attention, food, and clean water. Without this intervention, the statement indicated, delivering aid and evacuating these individuals would be impossible.
President Donald Trump commented on his wife's efforts, stating, "What she wants to do is save children, and that's her focus. And both sides are cooperating with her, so she's doing a very good job." He also responded to questions about potential trilateral peace talks by saying it was "not the worst idea I've ever heard."
The ceasefire's duration remains unspecified. According to the First Lady's office, Oleshky's pre-war population was an estimated 24,000, with approximately 1,700 to 2,000 residents remaining. This agreement follows previous efforts by the Trump administration to facilitate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine since the conflict began in February 2022.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the Russian military is coordinating the timing of the ceasefire in the Oleshky area and acknowledged Melania Trump's role in reaching the agreement. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also indicated on social media that they would adhere to the ceasefire orders.
The First Lady's office stated that residents wishing to evacuate to their preferred destinations will receive support from civilian leaders in both countries, with some potentially heading to Russia and others to Ukraine. An impartial American media organization is also expected to accompany Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground during the ceasefire.
Melania Trump's involvement in brokering this agreement reportedly began during a private discussion at her Fostering the Future event at the U.N. General Assembly last month. She has previously engaged with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the matter of children impacted by the war, including writing him a letter and receiving a response that indicated a willingness to engage directly regarding Ukrainian children residing in Russia.
