Melania Trump Brokers Cease-Fire for Ukrainian Town Facing Humanitarian Crisis
Evacuations and aid missions are underway in Oleshky as residents reportedly resort to eating grass.
An evacuation and aid operation is currently underway in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, located in the Russian-occupied Kherson region. The mission follows a temporary cease-fire brokered by First Lady Melania Trump, aimed at alleviating a severe humanitarian crisis.
Reports indicate that local residents in Oleshky have been surviving by eating grass due to a lack of food, clean water, and medicine. The city's population has significantly decreased from approximately 20,000 before the conflict to an estimated 1,700 to 2,000.
A convoy of 25 buses, accompanied by 50 medical professionals and ambulances, is prepared to transport over 750 residents who choose to leave the city. Melania Trump announced on X that her office worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to establish the terms of the localized cease-fire. This agreement took effect Tuesday and is scheduled to expire Sunday evening, Kyiv time.
"May this humanitarian mission end the suffering and begin a new chapter of durable peace between Russia and Ukraine," the First Lady stated on X on Thursday.
Despite the ongoing efforts, some residents express concern about their destinations if they evacuate, fearing they may not be able to reach Ukrainian-controlled territory via the planned route, which passes through Russia and Belarus, according to NBC News.
Ukrainian authorities have accused Russian forces of using civilians as human shields in Oleshky. Russia's human-rights commissioner, Yana Lantratova, stated in a video message Friday that residents wishing to go to Russian territory were gathering and would be given the opportunity to depart, as would those wishing to go to Ukrainian territory.
Ukraine's human-rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, praised Melania Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for their involvement in negotiating the cease-fire. Lubinets expressed hope that this mission could lead to broader humanitarian operations and contribute to conditions for lasting peace.
