Melania Trump Brokered Ceasefire for Oleshky Evacuations

Hundreds of residents have been evacuated from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in the Kherson region after US First Lady Melania Trump brokered a humanitarian ceasefire, according to authorities from both sides. The evacuees are traveling to southern Russia before proceeding through Belarus to reach Ukrainian-held territory.

Russia's human rights ombudsman Yana Lantratova stated that the operation proceeded without incident and was highly organized. Ukrainian authorities confirmed the evacuees' route. Lantratova and her Ukrainian counterpart have reportedly issued a joint request for the US First Lady to coordinate similar humanitarian missions regularly.

The White House announced on October 23 that the First Lady had persuaded both countries to temporarily halt military action to allow for the safe passage of civilians. Melania Trump described the situation in Oleshky as dire, with the remaining population, primarily elderly residents, urgently needing medical attention, food, and clean water. She anticipated that evacuees would be transported to their preferred destinations, whether in Russia or Ukraine.

Evacuations began on Friday, marking the fourth day of the most significant truce since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine four years ago. The estimated 2,000 remaining residents were offered the choice to travel to Ukrainian-held territory, Russian-held territory, or remain in Oleshky with replenished supplies. The convoy had the capacity to evacuate over 750 people.

Officials in Kyiv reported that residents bound for Ukraine were traveling to Anapa in southern Russia before flying to Belarus and crossing the border into northern Ukraine. Buses also transported residents who wished to go to Russia. Reports indicated that some Russian soldiers attempted to pressure residents onto the wrong buses, providing misleading information about the destinations.

Not all residents chose to leave. One resident told the BBC that she would not evacuate due to her animals and that her grandmother and other family members in Oleshky were also staying. The ongoing conflict elsewhere involved Russia's claim of downing over 1,000 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Ukraine reported ballistic missile attacks alongside drone waves. A Russian drone attack in the Sumy region resulted in one woman's death and eight injuries.

President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of intensifying attacks to cause suffering through another winter, citing continued terrorist strikes on Ukrainian cities. Zelensky also highlighted Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities, stating that Russian facilities across a wide territory are now within range. His office also announced sanctions against entities involved in Russia's Rassvet satellite communications system, which Kyiv asserts Moscow is expanding for military use.

Ukraine's ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets described the aid mission as unique and expressed hope for similar models to assist other stranded communities. A 25-bus, ambulance, and truck convoy arrived in Oleshky on Friday carrying food and medical supplies, following mine-clearing operations. The localized ceasefire in the Kherson region was expected to continue until Sunday evening.

Fighting continued in other areas, with Russia claiming to have shot down numerous Ukrainian drones and Ukraine reporting missile attacks. A drone strike in the Sumy region killed one woman and injured eight others.
