Mel Brooks, 100, Expedited Filming for Spaceballs Sequel Due to Age
The legendary filmmaker requested his scenes be shot quickly for 'Spaceballs: The New One', which is slated for a 2027 release.
Mel Brooks, who celebrated his 100th birthday this summer, requested that his scenes for the upcoming 'Spaceballs' sequel be filmed as soon as possible due to his age. Actor Daphne Zuniga shared the detail during a panel at 90s Con on Sunday, revealing Brooks's reasoning was, "You better film me now because I’m 100."
The sequel, titled 'Spaceballs: The New One', is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 23, 2027. Zuniga also confirmed that Rick Moranis will reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet and Bill Pullman will return as her husband. Their son, played by Lewis Pullman, and Keke Palmer are also part of the cast.
Brooks, known for classic films such as 'The Producers' and 'Young Frankenstein', celebrated his 100th birthday on June 28. His son, Max Brooks, shared photos from the celebration on Facebook, noting his father was "in perfect health with a razor sharp mind." Josh Gad, who collaborated with Brooks on the new 'Spaceballs' installment, also shared tributes online, praising the filmmaker's enduring career and creativity.
"For the past five years, I have had the greatest gift in my life… collaborating with and working alongside my comedy idol, @the.official.mel.brooks," Gad wrote on Instagram. "Today we celebrate 100 years of his life and legacy. He has made us laugh and hurt on the big screen, the small screen, the stage and even on our record players."
Brooks, a recipient of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award, began his career in the 1950s and is considered one of Hollywood's most celebrated comedic talents. He has achieved EGOT status, a rare feat accomplished by only a few in the entertainment industry.
