Meghan Markle's Public Appearance in London Analyzed by Experts

Meghan Markle's recent public appearance in London, her first in the UK since the Queen's funeral, has drawn commentary from experts who suggest the event was carefully planned to attract attention. The Duchess met with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai for afternoon tea at Claridge's hotel.

Body language analyst Judi James described Markle's interaction with Yousafzai as an 'intentionally intense' and 'dramatic' embrace, characterizing the Duchess's demeanor as that of a 'gracious duchess.' James noted that the farewell hug on the steps of Claridge's, a highly visible location, ensured the pair were photographed.

"The steps outside Claridge's must be one of London's most high-profile spots and it's when Meghan's 'gracious duchess' ritual of splaying and coat-flapping would ensure that if she hadn't already been spotted, that glamorous tan cape coat, fully extended like wings, would be sure to do the trick in drawing attention," James stated. She added that Markle's body language signaled warmth and friendship to the world.

PR expert Mark Borkowski suggested that Meghan had intentionally placed herself in the public eye by choosing Claridge's, a venue known for celebrity sightings. Borkowski commented on what he termed the 'Sussex contradiction,' where the couple sometimes seeks privacy while also choosing high-profile settings. "What a pantomime," he said. "On the one hand, you crave normality and plead for privacy. On the other, you choose one of London's most famous celebrity haunts, a magnet for paparazzi, and emerge looking as though you've stepped straight off a fashion runway."

Borkowski also posited that the management and VIP clientele of Claridge's might be displeased with the public nature of the event, suggesting it could undermine the hotel's reputation for discretion. "It's hardly a great advertisement for Claridge's. The sight of camera phones and TikTokers capturing private encounters sends a rather unfortunate message to celebrities and high-net-worth guests who pay handsomely for discretion."

Markle and Yousafzai first connected in 2020 during a virtual discussion on girls' education. Their meeting at Claridge's, where they reportedly had a £95-a-head afternoon tea, has not been publicly shared by Markle on social media. A source close to the Duchess described the meeting as personal.

Markle's attire for the occasion was noted, with reports estimating her outfit, including a Tove Studio coat, CO cashmere sweater, Ralph Lauren trousers, Chanel handbag, and Saint Laurent loafers, to be worth over £28,000. She also carried a canvas tote bag with a design depicting women in hijabs.

This appearance marked Markle's first significant public outing in London since the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. Concerns about her security have reportedly led her to avoid central London in recent months.
