Meghan Markle's Public Appearance Draws Scrutiny Over Intent
Experts analyze the Duchess of Sussex's interactions during her first UK visit since the Queen's funeral.
Meghan Markle's recent public appearance in London, marked by a lengthy embrace with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, has been interpreted by some experts as a deliberate effort to capture attention. The interaction occurred outside Claridge's hotel, a high-profile London venue, during Markle's first visit to the UK since Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.
Body language analyst Judi James described Markle's demeanor as embodying the 'gracious duchess' persona, noting an 'intentionally intense' and 'dramatic' hug with Yousafzai. James suggested that Markle adopted a pose resembling a "classic upmarket catalogue model" during their farewell, aiming to ensure they were photographed. The analyst also pointed to Markle's attire, reportedly valued at £25,000, as contributing to the visual impact of the moment.
PR expert Mark Borkowski suggested that Markle's choice of Claridge's, a well-known spot for celebrities, was a strategic move to place herself in the public eye. Borkowski characterized the event as a "pantomime," questioning the Duchess's simultaneous desire for privacy and her choice of a high-visibility location. He stated, "It's the same old Sussex contradiction. There are countless places they could have chosen for a cosy chat. The great irony is that Meghan wants to be seen as ordinary while continuing to operate in the extraordinary theatre of fame. You can't demand privacy while repeatedly choosing the spotlight."
Borkowski also speculated that Claridge's management and its privacy-conscious clientele might be displeased with the "pantomime" surrounding the afternoon tea, suggesting it could be detrimental to the hotel's reputation for discretion. "It's hardly a great advertisement for Claridge's," he remarked, noting that the presence of onlookers with camera phones undermines the sanctuary sought by celebrities and high-net-worth individuals.
Markle and Yousafzai, who first connected in 2020 during a virtual discussion on girls' education, shared afternoon tea at Claridge's. The meeting, which cost £95 per person, was reportedly a personal engagement and has not been shared on Markle's social media. Yousafzai, who survived a Taliban attack in 2012 for her advocacy of female education, now runs the Malala Fund, which campaigns for global girls' education.
This London encounter marked Markle's first public appearance in the capital since September 2022. Previously, in June 2022, Markle and Prince Harry faced some public booing upon their arrival at St. Paul's Cathedral for a service marking the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Despite transiting through London's Heathrow Airport on multiple occasions since then, concerns about her security are understood to have influenced her avoidance of central London.
