Meghan Markle's MasterChef Return Sparks Security Funding Debate in Australian Politics

Meghan Markle is set to return to Australian screens for Junior MasterChef Australia next year, potentially taking on a key hosting role alongside judge Poh Ling Yeow. Sources suggest the Duchess of Sussex could spend several weeks filming in Melbourne, possibly accompanied by Prince Harry and their children.

However, Meghan's upcoming visit has ignited a political debate in Victoria, Australia, concerning who should bear the cost of her security. Both of the state's major political parties have publicly stated they will not allocate taxpayer funds for the Duchess's personal protection during her stay.

The Victorian Labor government has confirmed it will not cover security expenses if it is re-elected in November. Similarly, Opposition Leader Jess Wilson has issued a firm pledge, stating that under a Liberal and Nationals government, "Not a single cent of Victorian taxpayer money should be spent on this."

This dispute echoes concerns that arose during the Sussexes' visit earlier this year, when questions were raised about the potential use of Victoria Police resources for their protection during public appearances. The distinction between taxpayer-funded personal security and the police presence required for public safety became a topic of discussion.

Meghan's involvement with MasterChef Australia began earlier this year when she made a surprise appearance on the main show. Marty Benson, the show's executive producer, revealed to The Age that a direct and audacious email was instrumental in securing her participation. Benson explained that he decided to approach Meghan at a time when she was facing significant public criticism following the cancellation of her Netflix show, "With Love, Meghan."

"Everyone was putting her down, the whole world was putting her down, and I was the guy that went, 'Wait a minute, I think she would be a great guest on our show,'" Benson told The Age. He described his outreach as a "press send and pray" email.

Benson felt that the criticism Meghan faced was unfair, attributing the shortcomings of her Netflix show to its producers rather than her. "I felt for her because everyone was so hard on her show... that's the reason why her show wasn't very good, not her," he added.

Meghan herself expressed enthusiasm for her return, stating in a release, "I had an incredible time with the whole team at MasterChef this past April, so when they approached me to come back and work with this young group of talent, it was an easy yes. I love cooking with my own kids, so seeing what these young stars create in the kitchen is going to be a lot of fun. I can't wait to see what they cook up."
