Meghan Markle's High-Street Style Praised by Stylist Over Designer Choices
A fashion expert notes that the Duchess of Sussex's more affordable Marks & Spencer outfits appear more polished and flattering.
Meghan Markle's fashion choices, particularly her recent selections from the British high-street retailer Marks & Spencer, are being lauded by a stylist for their polish and flattering fit, contrasting with some of her more expensive designer ensembles. The Duchess of Sussex was recently photographed in London wearing an M&S £85 blazer paired with £26 jeans, a look that fashion expert Rochelle White described as more 'effortlessly chic' and having better 'cut, fit and balance' than some of her previous, significantly costlier outfits.
White commented that Meghan's more affordable M&S pieces "look and feel more polished because the type of styling gives her shape and definition." She added that "oversized and expensive garments don't automatically translate into a flattering outfit. It can come across as untidy." The Duchess complemented the M&S blazer and jeans with a £16,210 diamond and emerald necklace by Logan Hollowell, £650 Jennifer Chamandi stilettos, and a Chanel bag.
This is not the first time Markle has favored Marks & Spencer. In October, an outfit she wore for afternoon tea with Malala Yousafzai at Claridge's, reportedly costing £28,000, drew criticism, highlighting the perceived disparity with her more accessible choices.
The Duchess's affinity for the British retailer has a history. In December 2017, she wore M&S Collection leather gloves (£17.50) to a Christmas church service. A month later, in January 2018, her appearance in Brixton featured an M&S Autograph bell-sleeve jumper costing £45, which quickly sold out.
During the wedding of Prince Harry's cousin Celia McCorquodale in June 2018, Markle wore a £3,992 floral dress that received mixed reviews, but an M&S fascinator priced at £29.50 was widely praised.
Further demonstrating her penchant for the brand, Markle wore an M&S bodycon dress, which retailed for £49.50, to the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance in November 2018.
Markle's recent London outing included a meeting with her former royal wedding hairstylist, George Northwood, at The Park restaurant. The pair were also joined by PR executive Sarah Corney. This engagement preceded Meghan and Prince Harry's first joint public appearance in the UK since their return, during which Meghan expressed her contentment, stating, "It's wonderful to be back." The couple undertook a series of engagements in Nottingham.
On Thursday, the Duchess's commitment to M&S continued as she wore a £28 belt from the retailer for a joint appearance with Prince Harry.
Meghan's style choices have been under scrutiny since her return to Britain, with this latest endorsement of high-street fashion suggesting a potential shift or continued appreciation for accessible yet stylish garments.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry was reportedly seen in a playful mood during engagements in Nottingham, with one supporter noting his interaction. The visits have drawn comment, with some critics labeling them a "cynical" attempt to resume royal duties indirectly, following King Charles's description of the Sussexes as "private citizens."
