Meghan Markle Meets With Malala Yousafzai in London
The Duchess of Sussex and the Nobel Peace Prize laureate reunited for afternoon tea in London, marking Markle's first public appearance in the city since September 2022.
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, was seen in London for the first time in years, attending an afternoon tea with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai at Claridge's hotel. The two were photographed leaving the Mayfair establishment together, sharing a warm embrace before parting ways.
Markle wore an ensemble valued at approximately £25,000, including a Tove Studio coat, a Crew Company sweater, Ralph Lauren trousers, a Chanel handbag, Yves Saint Laurent shoes, and a Logan Hollowell necklace. Their meeting included classic British afternoon tea, with witnesses noting cucumber sandwiches and scones. Malala Yousafzai, an advocate for girls' education, was notably a Muslim who does not drink alcohol, and both appeared to opt for tea and mineral water.
This engagement marks Markle's first public appearance in London since Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in September 2022. Previously, she and Prince Harry attended a service for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, where they were met with some boos. While Markle has passed through Heathrow Airport on several occasions since then, she had reportedly avoided central London due to security concerns.
Meghan and Malala first collaborated in October 2020 for a virtual discussion on the International Day of the Girl, focusing on the importance of girls' education. During that event, Markle emphasized that when women have a voice, societal conversations around policy and legislation shift. Prince Harry also participated, highlighting the global issue of girls being out of education.
The meeting also occurs amidst Prince Harry and Meghan's ongoing discussions regarding taxpayer-funded police protection in the United Kingdom. The couple had previously pursued an unsuccessful legal challenge over security arrangements for Harry during his visits from the U.S. It is understood that the committee overseeing royal and VIP security, Ravec, is reconsidering the level of protection for the couple and their children, who are now full-time residents in the UK.
In recent weeks, Markle has been involved with her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, announcing a festive range that included a chocolate advent calendar. This product release reportedly led to backlash against a British vicar who suggested an alternative, more affordable advent calendar. The Duchess's business ventures have previously included collaborations and product launches, with some items available exclusively in the U.S. This outing suggests a potential return to philanthropic work, possibly in the area of girls' education, following her re-emergence in the UK.
