Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, paid tribute to Gloria Steinem, describing her as a cherished friend and mentor, following the feminist icon's death.

Steinem, 92, passed away peacefully at her home in New York City on Wednesday, her foundation announced. In a heartfelt Instagram post on Thursday, Markle expressed her gratitude for Steinem's influence and friendship.

"I am celebrating the life and legacy of my friend and mentor," Markle wrote. "I am grateful to know that in these last few weeks and days she knew exactly how loved and admired she was."

Markle recounted shared experiences, including public interviews and efforts to encourage young voters. She also shared intimate details of their private relationship, highlighting Steinem's warmth and wisdom.

"Privately, she was even better than you would imagine," Markle stated. "Spending Thanksgiving with our family, introducing me to one of my best friends, loving our children with her whole heart, counseling me during hard times, and giving extraordinary advice and perspective with a cup of tea and an unrivaled cheekiness and wit."

Markle shared a poignant anecdote about Steinem's philosophy on empowering young women. Steinem, when approached by a mother who wondered if her daughter would know who she was, reportedly responded, "It doesn’t matter if she knows who I am. What matters is that she knows who SHE is."

Markle concluded her message by writing, "Rest in peace, and rest in pride. Look at what you’ve done for all of us. Thank you."

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and Gloria Steinem attend the Ms. Foundation Women of Vision Awards: Celebrating Generations of Progress & Power on May 16, 2023, in New York City.
