Meghan Markle Confronted Designer Over Stylist Mix-Up Involving Kate Middleton: Memoir
Designer Roland Mouret recounts how a simple attempt to return borrowed clothing led to a furious call from the Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, reportedly became furious with designer Roland Mouret after a misunderstanding involving Kate Middleton's stylist, according to Mouret's new memoir. The alleged incident occurred in 2016, shortly after Markle and Prince Harry's relationship became public.
Mouret, in his book "I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher’s Boy Who Dressed the World," described offering Markle a selection of his designs. He instructed a team member to leave the clothes at the palace for Markle to keep as long as she wished, with strict instructions not to follow up or discuss it with anyone.
However, the designer recounted that the same team member later contacted Kate Middleton's stylist at the palace to retrieve the borrowed items. This action prompted a heated response from Markle.
"Meghan was furious and called me," Mouret wrote, as detailed in an excerpt published by The Times. "She told me, 'You don’t realise what you’ve done! You’ve embarrassed me!'"
Mouret apologized for the misstep, acknowledging Markle's desire for privacy. Despite his apology, Markle reportedly declared, "You know now I can never wear your clothes again." Mouret expressed his confusion over her decision but respected her choice.
Later, Mouret contacted Markle after noticing her wearing what he described as a "cheap high street copy" of one of his designs. He suggested she return to wearing his clothes, to which she responded by offering to visit him.
The memoir touches upon the long-reported frosty relationship between Markle and Middleton. In a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Markle clarified a widely publicized story, stating that it was Middleton who made her cry before her 2018 wedding over an issue concerning flower-girl dresses, not the other way around as initially reported. Markle added that Middleton had since apologized.
Despite rumors that Markle and Prince Harry might apologize to Prince William and Middleton following their return to the UK, sources have indicated this is not the case, with royal commentators suggesting the couple remains defiant.
