Megan McKenna Claims Big Brother Bosses Supplied Alcohol, Leading to Diary Room Meltdown
The reality TV personality reflects on her 2016 'Celebrity Big Brother' appearance, stating show producers provided alcohol, contributing to her public breakdown and subsequent struggles with paranoia and PTSD.
Megan McKenna has spoken out about her experience on 'Celebrity Big Brother' in 2016, alleging that show producers "fed and fed" her alcohol, which contributed to her infamous Diary Room meltdown. McKenna, who was 22 at the time of filming, reflected on her reality television career in a recent interview on Fearne Cotton's "Happy Place" podcast, revealing that the intense exposure has left her with symptoms she likens to PTSD and paranoia.
McKenna's stint on the then-Channel 5 series was marked by a highly publicized breakdown in the Diary Room. During the incident, she launched into an expletive-laden rant directed at fellow housemates John Partridge and Tiffany Pollard. The distress was severe enough to require security intervention, and McKenna subsequently received a formal warning from Big Brother. Her behavior also generated hundreds of complaints to the broadcasting watchdog OfCom.
"I went on to Big Brother obviously wanting to show people that, you know, I am nice and I'm not this just crazy persona of, oh, she's heartbroken and losing her head all the time," McKenna stated. "But obviously I went on Big Brother and back in the day, they did feed and feed and feed you alcohol. You know, I was 22 again, very drunk and made a tit of myself again."
Fearne Cotton noted that reality television in that era was significantly different, describing older shows as "the wild west" with less governance compared to modern programming. Despite the difficult experiences, McKenna expressed gratitude for her time on the shows and her relationships with the production crews.
"I wouldn't change anything because I'm really grateful and I loved everybody that I worked with on the shows like the producers, the cameramen," she said. "It was just a lot of things are ramped up. Everything's heightened when you're in them houses for like a month and everyone like, we're all here, you know? We're doing a show."
McKenna's reality TV career began with an audition for MTV's 'Ex On The Beach' in 2015, following a challenging period in her personal life. Despite admitting to being heavily intoxicated during her audition, she was signed for the show. She described feeling "on edge" throughout filming, exacerbated by confronting an individual who had been involved with her ex-partner.
Following 'Ex On The Beach', McKenna appeared on numerous other reality programs, leading up to her 'Celebrity Big Brother' appearance. She later joined 'TOWIE' (The Only Way Is Essex) in March 2016, shortly after her eviction from the Big Brother house. McKenna also starred in her own show and participated in more lighthearted programs like 'MasterChef'.
McKenna reflected on how her on-screen personas, particularly the "mental Megan" characterization, led to public stigma. While this portrayal initially brought commercial success, she grew weary of public commentary based on a manufactured image rather than her true feelings. The constant filming and public scrutiny, she explained, contributed to her paranoia and symptoms akin to PTSD.
"My friends we joke about it now but it is a real thing," McKenna said, describing her tendency to whisper and feel constantly aware of being filmed. "You've got cameras under everywhere and on you and then your conversation that you think is private, isn't. You know what I mean? And it's on an episode and you're like, 'Oh, wow. I can't believe I said that'."
She emphasized that this paranoia was not isolated to one show but a pervasive effect of reality television. "You have to be really careful as well like what you say and your opinions," she added. "But I wear my heart on my sleeve and I can't hide my emotions. So no matter if I was not answering a question, it was a show on my face."
