Medieval Castle Linked to Henry VIII Listed for $5 Million
Allington Castle, a 12th-century property with a moat and jousting yard, is on the market.
Allington Castle, a medieval estate with a storied past that includes alleged visits from Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, has been listed for sale at £5 million (approximately $5 million USD). Located in Maidstone, Kent, the restored 12th-century castle sits on 42 acres of woodland along the River Medway.
The property, first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, has been transformed into a grand residence featuring a full moat, a bear-baiting ring, and a jousting yard. Inside, notable features include a Great Hall, inner courtyards, and subterranean caves. The castle offers 30 bedrooms and amenities such as a tennis court, greenhouse, and an indoor swimming pool, along with separate staff lodgings.
The Grade I-listed castle is also equipped to host weddings and corporate events for up to 150 guests. The listing from Knight Frank highlights the formal gardens with ornamental fountains, a flourishing meadow, a historic dovecote, and nesting kestrels. The grounds also offer potential for reviving a productive fruit and vegetable garden.
Previously owned by pollster Sir Robert Worcester until his death in 2025, the castle has also served as a filming location for productions such as 'Horrible Histories' and 'The Avengers,' according to the BBC.
Knight Frank describes the acquisition as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to own a historic landmark, suitable for a private estate or a commercial venture. The estate's location provides convenient access to Mote Park for outdoor activities and the M20 motorway, connecting to London, Dover, and Folkestone.
Oli Streeter, an associate at Knight Frank, noted the castle's historical significance, including Henry VIII's stay in its 'Royal Room'.
