A 23-year-old medical student was fatally shot in his bed during a home invasion in Sydney's southwest, in what police suspect was a targeted attack potentially linked to gang violence. Marco Tapia was killed early Tuesday morning when three masked intruders broke into his family's home in Glen Alpine.
Police were called to the Mount Sugarloaf Drive residence at approximately 3:40 a.m. on Tuesday. Tapia was shot multiple times and died at the scene. His mother, father, and sister were present in the home at the time of the incident but were unharmed. The offenders fled the scene and remain at large.
Authorities are investigating possible links to a feud between rival gangs, the Coconut Cartel and the Alameddine network. Shortly after the shooting, an Instagram account believed to be associated with the Coconut Cartel posted a message that read, 'Popped the wrong person, didn't even get the right house,' accompanied by laughing emojis. Police are aware of the post and are examining it as part of their investigation into the fatal shooting.
Acting Superintendent Gretchen Atkins stated at a press conference that while the investigation is in its early stages, the attack is believed to have been targeted. Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen vehicles or individuals in the Glen Alpine area around the time of the shooting to come forward.
Marco Tapia, described as a keen mixed martial artist and a dedicated student, had no known ties to gangs and was only known to police for minor traffic offenses. He had recently completed a bachelor of medical and health sciences in 2024 and had begun studying biomedical engineering, undertaking an internship in personalized surgery. His family described him as having a bright future. Just a month prior, his university engineering team won an award for a medical scaffold they developed. He was also involved as a youth leader at his local Hillsong church.
This incident follows another fatal home invasion in Sydney just days earlier, where Emad Alameddine, 28, was shot dead at his home in Guildford. The ongoing conflict between the Alameddine network and the Coconut Cartel has been previously linked to several shootings and deaths across Sydney in recent months.
