Medical Flight Plummets 13,000 Feet Near Nantucket Before Disappearing Off Radar

A medical flight bound for Boston experienced a catastrophic descent of over 10,000 feet off the coast of Nantucket before disappearing from radar screens on Oct. 3. The Gulfstream G100 aircraft departed from Bermuda at 12:41 a.m. with six people aboard.
Air traffic controllers became aware of the situation when the plane lost contact with the Federal Aviation Administration around 1:20 a.m. The agency subsequently issued a Search and Rescue Alert. Earlier, at 12:46 a.m., the pilot of the aircraft had declared an emergency, according to reports. Debris from the vanished plane has since been discovered by U.S. Coast Guard personnel amid an extensive search operation off Nantucket. The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation.
