McVay Tells Rams Coaches to 'Be Better' After Eagles Fan Interaction
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay addressed his staff's conduct following a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, where coaches were seen exchanging gestures with fans.
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay stated that he has spoken with his assistants about their conduct after they were observed interacting with Philadelphia Eagles fans from the coaches' booth during Sunday's game. The Rams secured a comeback victory over the Eagles, but videos later surfaced showing members of the Rams' staff engaging with fans.
As Eagles supporters were directing gestures toward the Rams' coaches following a go-ahead touchdown by Kyren Williams with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, some Rams coaches were seen banging on the glass of their booth. This action appeared to elicit a response from the fans, who then reportedly threw water bottles at the coaches.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. McVay commented on the situation, indicating that he had addressed the matter with his assistants. "We’ll be better in those situations," McVay told ESPN's Sara Barshop. He added, "We’ll learn from that. We’ll feel better. Those fans are really into it, but I know that we want to make sure that we’re representing the class and just the calm steadiness that we want to have while also being emotionally into it."
McVay, who previously coached against the Eagles annually as an assistant and offensive coordinator for Washington from 2010 to 2016, acknowledged his familiarity with the passionate Philadelphia fanbase. He also mentioned experiencing similar situations in the past while calling plays from the booth as a coordinator, though he did not specify the location.
According to Barshop, McVay and his coordinators have discussed the incident and are focused on ensuring it does not become a recurring issue. "We’ll learn from that," McVay said, "and there’s ways that we can have that reflected."
