Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay has taken full responsibility for his team's significant loss to the San Francisco 49ers in their season opener in Melbourne. The Rams were outplayed by their NFC West rivals, suffering a 27-7 defeat.
The Rams' preparation for the game, including a late arrival and an attempt to maintain Los Angeles time, was contrasted with the 49ers' earlier arrival and acclimatization. San Francisco appeared the better-prepared team, outgaining the Rams by nearly 100 yards and limiting reigning MVP Matthew Stafford to 155 passing yards.
"I didn't do a good enough job getting us ready to go," McVay stated after the game. "This is a good, humbling day. I have to do a better job for our group collectively. They outplayed us in every facet. I didn't do nearly a good enough job."
McVay emphasized that he made "no excuses" regarding the team's travel or any other factors, stating, "Whether you want to say it's about travel, whatever, we just weren't good enough in that window. I didn't coach good enough and we'll look at it and we'll move forward."
San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy led the 49ers' offense, completing 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Christian McCaffrey contributed 68 rushing yards, and rookie Kaelon Black added 65 yards.
The Rams' sole score came early in the second quarter from a touchdown run by Kyren Williams. However, San Francisco responded with 24 unanswered points. Defensively, linebacker Fred Warner recorded a game-high 11 tackles for the 49ers. Kicker Eddy Pineiro sealed the victory with a 56-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
