McVay Hints at Firings After Special Teams Meltdown Costs Rams
Rams coach Sean McVay expresses frustration and signals potential changes following critical special teams errors in overtime loss.
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay indicated that significant changes could be imminent for the team's special teams unit following a costly overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Rams fell to a 2-3 record after a series of special teams blunders contributed to their defeat on Monday night.
Kicker Harrison Mevis missed a 50-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter and later had a 48-yard attempt blocked in overtime, a sequence that directly led to the Bills securing the winning possession. The missed kicks followed a pattern of struggles for Mevis, whose 55.6% field goal percentage ranks last in the league this season.
Speaking to reporters after the game, McVay did not hold back his disappointment. "In the kicking game, especially with out PAT, field goal [unites], not even close to good enough. It cost us the game tonight," he stated. When asked about potential repercussions, McVay added, "I’m gonna evaluate everything," suggesting a thorough review of both personnel and coaching within the special teams department.
This is not the first time McVay has made in-season adjustments to his special teams. Last season, he fired special-teams coordinator Chase Blackburn after a loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Given McVay's history and his direct comments, it appears likely that changes will be made to the Rams' special teams before their next game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
