McVay Admits 'Dumbass' Travel Plans Contributed to Rams' Season-Opening Loss

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has acknowledged that the team's travel arrangements before their NFL season opener in Melbourne, Australia, were poorly conceived and contributed to their significant loss.

In their first game of the season, the Rams were convincingly defeated by the San Francisco 49ers with a score of 27-7. A key talking point following the game was the Rams' decision to travel to Australia just 28 hours before kickoff, in contrast to the 49ers, who arrived a week earlier to acclimate.

On game day, San Francisco appeared to be better prepared and more rested, outgaining the Rams by nearly 100 yards and limiting Matthew Stafford to 155 passing yards. Following the Rams' subsequent 28-6 victory over the New York Giants in Week 2, McVay reflected on the team's initial performance.

"Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn, and sometimes you have a dumbass coach that makes travel plans that puts you in a bad spot," McVay stated, referring to the circumstances surrounding the season opener. "So, there you go."

The 49ers opted for an early arrival, departing on Wednesday, September 2, and landing in Melbourne on Friday morning for the September 10 game. The Rams, however, did not depart until Tuesday, September 8, leaving them with approximately 28 hours to prepare.

Initially, McVay had defended the team's approach, telling reporters that their strategy was based on their own experiences and what they believed was best. "It doesn't mean that we think we're right and a different approach is wrong," he said at the time. "It's just what we think is best based on the things that we've done and what we've learned over our time here."

However, in the aftermath of the loss, McVay's perspective shifted. "I didn't do a good enough job getting us ready to go," he admitted. "There were some opportunities where maybe the game could have flipped, but they deserve the win." He added, "Sometimes sports can humble you and today was one of those days. I make no excuses. Whether you want to say it's about travel, whatever, we just weren't good enough in that window. I didn't coach good enough and we'll look at it and we'll move forward and that's where we're at right now."

The Rams found their footing in Week 2, securing a 28-6 win against the Giants at SoFi Stadium. Notably, three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald participated in his first NFL game in 32 months during this victory, having missed the season opener against the 49ers. Donald recorded three tackles in the game, which also saw the Giants lose quarterback Jaxson Dart to a knee injury in the first quarter.
