McMahon Backs Coalition to Reduce Education Bureaucracy, Empower Teachers

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon is championing a national initiative aimed at reducing federal education bureaucracy and empowering local educators. The "Let Teachers Teach Coalition," launched on Constitution Day, seeks to shift decision-making authority back to classrooms and school districts nationwide.

McMahon stated that teachers are often "constrained by bureaucracy, political agendas and mandates that have little to do with helping students succeed." She believes the coalition will give a voice to educators facing unnecessary regulations and restrictive systems, ultimately creating an environment where students, families, and communities can thrive.

The coalition, spearheaded by the America First Policy Institute (AFPI), provides toolkits for educators and parents to navigate local school board politics and engage directly with board members. AFPI emphasizes that while some education policy is set at state and federal levels, many daily issues for teachers are determined by local districts. The initiative aims to build a national network of educators who can advocate for solutions and replicate successful local policies across the country.

This effort aligns with President Donald Trump's mandate to reduce the footprint of the federal Department of Education and return governance to the states. Data cited by department officials indicates that only three in 10 students are proficient in math and reading, despite significant federal investment since the department's creation in 1979. The initiative also complements McMahon's "Returning Education to the States" tour, which engages directly with families on the administration's decentralization plan.

In line with this directive, the administration has facilitated interagency agreements, such as transferring student loan collection and management to the Department of the Treasury. Additionally, the Education Freedom Tax Credit, set to take effect in January 2027, will offer individuals a tax credit for contributions to scholarship-granting organizations.

McMahon has consistently highlighted that the Department of Education's primary role is as a pass-through for federal funding, not in setting local curricula, purchasing textbooks, or hiring teachers.
