McIlroy in Contention at BMW PGA Championship, Trails Leader Gerard

Rory McIlroy maintained his position in contention at the BMW PGA Championship after carding a five-under-par 67 in the second round. He now sits four strokes behind the current leader, Ryan Gerard, who holds a two-shot advantage.

Gerard, an American, posted a flawless 65 featuring five birdies and an eagle to reach 12-under par. He is followed by Australia's Adam Scott and Italy's Filippo Celli, both at 10-under.

McIlroy, from Northern Ireland, made steady progress with three birdies in his opening five holes. Despite dropping shots on the eighth and 16th, he recovered with four birdies on the back nine, including consecutive gains on the 17th and 18th holes. He is currently at eight-under par overall.

The Northern Irishman's pursuit of a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title was indirectly aided by the withdrawal of Patrick Reed. Reed, who leads the DP World Tour standings, retired from the tournament after nine holes due to injury while nine-over par for his round. McIlroy commented that Reed's withdrawal presents an opportunity for him to gain ground in the standings.

"This weekend is a big weekend for me to pick up a few points and make the race even tighter going into these last few weeks," McIlroy said. "I'm in a great spot heading into the weekend."

Among other notable players, US PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai finished with birdies on the final two holes to card a 69, placing him at nine-under alongside Spain's Manuel Elvira. McIlroy and Open champion Ryan Fox are also among a group at eight-under.

Several prominent golfers missed the cut, including five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, who finished at one-over par. Englishman Tommy Fleetwood also failed to advance, ending at three-over after a second-round 74. Spain's Jon Rahm had a difficult tournament, finishing last among all competitors after rounds of 78 and 77.
