McDonald's Joins Trend of AI-Driven Dynamic Pricing

McDonald's is implementing AI-powered algorithms to determine menu prices, a move that could lead to varying costs for the same items across different locations. The technology analyzes data from thousands of McDonald's restaurants to estimate what customers in a particular area are willing to pay.

According to a report from Reuters, this strategy allows for dynamic pricing, where the cost of items can fluctuate based on consumer behavior and local market conditions. For instance, a Big Mac could be priced differently at two McDonald's locations just a few miles apart. One reported example showed a Big Mac costing $5.69 at one Fresno, California, location while another just two miles away listed the same burger at $6.89.

This approach is part of a broader trend of "surveillance pricing," where companies leverage data collected on consumer habits, online activity, and even device or location information to set prices. Author Lindsay Owens, in her book "Gouged: The End of a Fair Price — and What That Means for Your Wallet," described surveillance pricing as the "intersection of two things Americans hate: being spied on and being overcharged."

Companies are increasingly using AI to analyze purchasing patterns and adjust prices accordingly. This can range from subtle, small increases on individual items that add up over time to more significant fluctuations. The practice is becoming more prevalent as consumer data becomes more accessible and sophisticated AI tools are developed.

Beyond fast food, dynamic pricing is already common in industries like airlines. Supermarkets are also moving towards electronic shelf labels that allow for real-time price updates. While some major grocery chains have stated they do not plan to adopt dynamic pricing, the trend suggests that consumers may face increasingly variable prices across various retail sectors. The convenience of online shopping and delivery services, while appealing, has also provided companies with extensive data on consumer spending habits, which is then used to inform pricing strategies.
