McDaniel Stands Firm Amid Chargers' Winless Streak
Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel insists his commitment to the Los Angeles Chargers remains unwavering despite the team's 0-5 start to the NFL season.
Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel stated that the team's ongoing losing streak has not impacted his coaching performance or dedication. The Chargers currently hold an 0-5 record, with an upcoming challenging matchup against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs.
McDaniel emphasized his consistent level of effort and investment in the team, regardless of the current standings. "I feel like it’s core to my job to always feel that way," McDaniel said. "I need to do the very best I possibly can, all the time, because [of] the players, the organization, the fans."
He further articulated that this approach is "second nature" and that complacency in the NFL is detrimental. "The second you get comfortable in this league, it’s a wrap; it’s too good," he stated. "I will be doing my very best, because from an integrity standpoint, I think it’s really insulting to do anything else. And that won’t change."
The Chargers' offense has struggled significantly, averaging 16.8 points per game, which ranks as the third-lowest mark in the league. This offensive inefficiency has coincided with a notable underperformance from quarterback Justin Herbert, who currently ranks last in total quarterback rating.
McDaniel dismissed the notion that he would only intensify his efforts due to the team's struggles. "I would be so embarrassed if I told you, ‘Well, now I’m going to try harder’," McDaniel said. "Like, what? What have you been doing? I’m confident in the players that we have. The improvement that I see before the results generally lead to good things. But talk is cheap. We got to do."
