Sen. Mitch McConnell's staff is aiming for the senator to return to the Senate later this month, according to Rep. James Comer. Comer, R-Ky., indicated he has been in contact with McConnell's staff.

"I expect that. I sure hope so," Comer said when asked if McConnell was expected to rejoin his colleagues on Sept. 14, the date the Senate is scheduled to reconvene.

Comer, chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, stated that McConnell's staff has "said it’s their goal for senator McConnell to be here… when the Senate" returns.

The Senate is slated to return to Washington, D.C., on Sept. 14. The chamber will hold pro forma sessions on Sept. 8 and Sept. 10 before adjourning until Sept. 14, when a vote is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

McConnell, 84, suffered a fall in June and was subsequently hospitalized. He was released from a rehabilitation center nearly a month prior to Comer's remarks. McConnell has served in the Senate since 1985 and is not seeking re-election this year.
