McCarthy Sparks Giants' Rally, Skattebo Benched Amidst Offensive Struggles
Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy's late-game performance raised questions about the New York Giants' starting quarterback situation, while running back Cam Skattebo saw no carries.
Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy provided a late spark for the New York Giants, throwing for 243 yards in the final 11 minutes of Sunday's game to help erase a significant deficit, in a performance that raises questions about the team's starting quarterback position. Meanwhile, running back Cam Skattebo was largely sidelined and did not record any carries.
Coach John Harbaugh benched veteran quarterback Jameis Winston in the fourth quarter after he threw two interceptions. McCarthy then entered the game and led a rally that fell short in a 34-27 loss. Harbaugh, however, declined to commit to a starting quarterback for the next game, stating he could not answer the question so soon after the game's conclusion.
"I can't answer that now," Harbaugh said when pressed by reporters. "Game just ended 10 minutes ago." He added, "It's not even up for discussion or conversation right now. We got to go back and go to work. I mean, I have no problem with Jameis whatsoever. I love the way he competes, love the way he fights."
Skattebo's lack of involvement comes after he has fumbled the ball four times and lost one this season. Harbaugh acknowledged that the decision for Skattebo not to carry the ball was not by design, stating, "When he was in there, we didn't call any runs." The Giants' running game as a whole struggled, gaining only 84 yards.
Harbaugh expressed frustration with his team's backfield, noting that none of the running backs have consistently seized the opportunity. "Nobody's really taken the bull by the horns," he said of the running back competition involving Najee Harris, Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy, and Devin Singletary. "So we put four guys [active] and see if we can get something going with the running game. That was the idea."
McCarthy, who was traded to the Giants from the Vikings last month, expressed his disappointment in the loss but focused on future improvement. "I'm not pleased when you lose," McCarthy said. "At the end of the day, no matter what happens, we try to get that 1-0 win each and every week, and I've got to look back at the tape and find ways to get better."
Harbaugh praised McCarthy's effort, stating, "I thought he came in there and did a heck of a job given the circumstances." The Giants face continued questions about their offensive leadership as they look to improve their performance.
