McCaffrey Brothers Set to Face Off as 49ers Host Commanders
For the first time in their NFL careers, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey will play against his younger brother, Luke McCaffrey of the Washington Commanders.
The McCaffrey family will have a unique Gameday experience on Sunday when the San Francisco 49ers host the Washington Commanders, as brothers Christian and Luke McCaffrey are set to face each other on the field for the first time in their professional careers.
"He’s the only brother I’ve never gotten to play with or against, so I think this completes the cycle," Christian McCaffrey said this week. "I know it’s a different uniform, but [I’m] proud of him and everything that he’s done."
Christian, a seasoned 13-year veteran, grew up playing football alongside his older brothers Max and Dylan. A widely shared clip shows a 7-year-old Christian scoring a touchdown on his older brother’s pee-wee team, a moment that foreshadowed his future success.
Luke, the youngest of the four McCaffrey brothers, is now 25 and has established his own NFL career, primarily as the Commanders' kick returner. He has returned 41 kicks for 1,191 yards during his career. While he has not been a primary receiver, catching 29 passes over the 2024 and 2025 seasons, his presence on the field makes this matchup significant for the family.
"Obviously, there’s nostalgia with that," Christian McCaffrey added, reflecting on the prospect of competing against his brother.

Marquee Matchup: LB Fred Warner vs. QB Jayden Daniels
The game also features a critical matchup between 49ers linebacker Fred Warner and Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. Mobile quarterbacks have presented challenges for the 49ers, and Daniels, with his significant rushing threat, is a prime example. Since his debut in 2024, Daniels has averaged 50.8 rushing yards per game, the highest among NFL quarterbacks. The 49ers have struggled against mobile quarterbacks, allowing 50 or more rushing yards to opposing QBs four times since 2024, resulting in a 1-3 record in those contests.

Despite an elbow injury, Daniels demonstrated his dual-threat capability last week, rushing nine times for 103 yards and two touchdowns in his return. With linebacker Dre Greenlaw serving a one-game suspension, the 49ers will rely heavily on Warner to contain Daniels' mobility.
Projected Outcome
Analysts project a 30-13 victory for the 49ers. Quarterback Brock Purdy is expected to capitalize on the Commanders' defense, which ranks second worst in the league against the pass, continuing the 49ers' undefeated streak. The 49ers are 17-1 when favored by more than a touchdown, with the current spread against Washington set at 7 1/2 points.
