New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been urged by some residents to forgo attending the 25th anniversary commemoration of the September 11th terror attacks. Critics argue that Mamdani, who was a child during the 2001 attacks, lacks a personal connection to the event and that his presence would be inappropriate given his political stances and associations.

A petition signed by individuals affected by the attacks calls for Mamdani to be barred from the ceremony, asserting that the event should be a space for mourning and remembrance, not political expression. Giovanni Galante, whose wife was killed on 9/11, stated that their objection is based on Mamdani's public record, his alleged failure to acknowledge the full horror of the day, and his associations with individuals who have reportedly minimized the attacks or defended terrorists.

Specific concerns raised by critics include Mamdani's past interactions and endorsements. He was noted to have been associated with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, described as a figure with anti-gay views and an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Additionally, Mamdani reportedly shared a meal with Mahmoud Khalil, identified as a lead organizer of an anti-Israel event at Columbia University in 2024. His endorsement of Darializa Avila Chevalier, a fellow Democratic Socialists of America member who has been critical of the U.S. and its flag, was also cited. Furthermore, Mamdani's wife, Rama Duwaji, reportedly "liked" a social media post that referred to investigations into sexual violence during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks as a "mass rape hoax."

These associations and past actions, critics argue, demonstrate a disregard for the values held dear by many New Yorkers and those who suffered losses on 9/11. The sentiment from some petition signatories is that Mamdani's presence would detract from the solemnity of the occasion, which should be reserved for unified grieving and reflection on the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the 2001 attacks.
