Mayor Mamdani to Accept 'Peacemaker Award' Alongside Iranian Lobbying Group Facing Scrutiny
The New York City mayor will receive an award from the Peace Action Fund of New York State, which is also honoring the National Iranian American Council, an organization that has faced accusations of ties to the Iranian government.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is scheduled to receive a "peacemaker" award on October 5 from the Peace Action Fund of New York State (PAFNYS), an anti-war non-profit group. However, the mayor will not attend the event to accept the William Sloane Coffin Jr. Peacemaker Award. A spokesperson for the mayor confirmed his absence but did not provide further details.
PAFNYS stated that Mamdani was selected for the honor due to his "support of Palestinian rights resonat[ing] with many of the students of our Campus Organizing Program," referencing his past as a student organizer. The organization is also honoring the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), a Washington D.C.-based non-profit whose dealings with Iran have drawn criticism.
NIAC, which advocates for bridging relations between the U.S. and Iran, has been a subject of controversy. In 2020, Republican senators Ted Cruz, Tom Cotton, and Mike Braun urged the Justice Department to investigate NIAC for potential coordination with the Iranian government. More recently, NIAC filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's actions concerning Iran, arguing that military actions were being conducted without congressional authorization.
This award ceremony comes months after Mamdani's administration faced scrutiny for a planned meeting between his international affairs commissioner, Ana Maria Archila, and Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani. The U.S. State Department reportedly blocked the July meeting, and Mamdani subsequently stated that the request had been made in error and was not initiated by his office.
The William Sloane Coffin, Jr. Peace Maker awards are scheduled to be presented at Scandinavia House in Midtown Manhattan.
