Mayor Mamdani Secures Federal Security Clearance After Meeting with Trump

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday that he has received his federal security clearance, granting him the ability to access classified briefings on potential terror threats and other sensitive information pertinent to New York City. This development occurred approximately one week after a meeting with President Donald Trump at Gracie Mansion.

Mamdani confirmed his clearance in a brief statement to reporters in Brooklyn, stating, "Yes, I have my security clearance." The timeline for when he was officially granted the clearance was not specified.

The absence of this clearance had drawn attention earlier in the month, as reports indicated that the mayor had not obtained top-level security access more than eight months into his term. This lack of access raised concerns about his potential responsiveness during emergencies.

The news of the clearance followed President Trump's visit to the mayor's Manhattan residence during the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting, which took place on September 21, was described by both Mamdani and Trump as a discussion focused on New York City and potential housing projects.

Sources familiar with the process suggested that the multi-month delay in Mamdani's clearance was not unusual, particularly given his prior experience as a state assembly member. Mamdani, 34, is noted to have limited experience in government prior to his mayoral tenure.

Other recent mayors have also experienced delays or complexities regarding federal security clearances. Former Mayor Eric Adams had his clearance revoked following a federal indictment that was later dismissed. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio did not seek his clearance until approximately nine months into his first term, after it was reported by The Post that he had not yet submitted the necessary applications. De Blasio eventually received approval more than a year and a half into his term.
