Mayor Zohran Mamdani's handwritten notes were recently on full display during a City Hall hearing, revealing scribbled thoughts on topics ranging from city administration to animal welfare regulations. One notable entry questioned, "Who is our DHS commissioner?"
Mamdani was attending a hearing that addressed issues concerning horses and housing. Among his notes was a reference to horses having "5 week/yr," potentially alluding to a city law mandating that carriage horses receive "no less than five weeks of vacation or furlough every twelve months."
Other legible notes included a concern about two hospitals in Brooklyn allegedly providing limited medical care, with Mamdani writing, "Two hospitals in BK allegedly only provide Tylenol and peptobismol to NYers in custody." He also penned a potentially confusing line about staggering percentages and caps, noting, "Should we stagger down ....25% and the cap? Whether or not it's $600k or $255k. This is over year."
The hearing Mamdani attended on Wednesday focused on a bill to ban horse-drawn carriages, a measure the City Council had passed the previous month. He was tasked with deciding whether to sign the bill into law. Additionally, he heard testimony regarding a bill that would grant community groups the first opportunity to purchase certain residential properties before they are listed on the open market.
A representative from City Hall did not immediately provide a comment on the mayor's notes.
