Mayor Mamdani Plays Late-Night Basketball at NYPD Gym
Sources confirm the mayor has been using a Queens police academy gym for pickup games.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been participating in late-night pickup basketball games with associates at the Det. Steven D. McDonald Police Academy in College Point, Queens, sources confirmed to The Post. Mamdani has reportedly played at the facility, located approximately 10 miles from Gracie Mansion, a half-dozen times since July.
The games reportedly take place after hours, with the mayor and his companions entering the gym through a loading dock around 10 or 11 p.m. This activity began around the time of the Knicks' championship win and a July 16 ceremony that renamed the academy.
Mamdani's spokesperson, Dora Pekec, confirmed the mayor's use of the facility. "The Mayor would never want to interfere with recruit activities, and if his use of the facility were to cause any disruption, he would find a different place to shoot hoops," Pekec stated. She added that staff were informed that the basketball games would not disrupt training operations.
Some reports suggested that the mayor's late-night games had "scrambled academy operations on several occasions," though sources speaking to The Post disputed this characterization. One image shows Mamdani wearing a New York Knicks jersey at a previous event.
