Mayor Mamdani Heckled at Oct. 7 Memorial Vigil
Protesters disrupted a candlelit vigil in Union Square, confronting the mayor with chants and accusations.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced boos and heckling from anti-Israel protesters Wednesday night at a candlelit vigil in Union Square intended to honor victims of the Oct. 7 attacks and subsequent war.
Protesters, some wearing keffiyehs, marched from City Hall to the event, organized by Israelis for Peace, shouting slogans such as “You coward!” and “How do you let this happen?” Other chants directed at Mamdani included “Mayor Mamdani take a stand!” and “Shame on you.”
Mamdani, holding a candle, remained stoic during the disruptions, standing alongside former City Comptroller Brad Lander.
The protest at the vigil followed an earlier demonstration outside City Hall, where protesters criticized Mamdani's stance since taking office, accusing him of betraying Palestinian causes.
