Mayor Mamdani Declines to Commit to Increased Subway Police Presence After Fatal Shooting

Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday did not confirm whether he would increase police presence on New York City subways following the fatal shooting of a man on a Midtown train platform over the weekend. The mayor's response came as the shooter remains at large.

Darell Rodriguez, 26, was shot in the chest just before 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the 53rd Street/7th Avenue subway station. He was reportedly on his way to work at the time of the incident. The NYPD has released surveillance images of a suspect and is asking for the public's assistance in identifying the individual.

When pressed by reporters about potentially deploying more officers underground, Mamdani stated, “I have full confidence in our PD in their work to apprehend the suspect, and I am confident in the approach that they are taking at this time.”

During an unrelated press conference in The Bronx, Mamdani offered condolences to Rodriguez's family. "Every single New Yorker deserves to be safe on every single train, on every single subway platform, no matter where they’re going across our five boroughs," he said. "We know that we’ve made strides in making our subway safer, and we also know that this shooting serves as an incredibly painful reminder of all that still has to be done to root out the scourge of gun violence from across our city."

The mayor emphasized his sympathy for the victim, saying, "at this time, you know, my heart goes out to the family of the individual who was killed, to the loved ones of the individual who was killed."

City officials have not yet announced specific new strategies to address subway safety in light of the recent incident. The NYPD is continuing its investigation to find the suspect responsible for Saturday's fatal shooting.
