Mayor Mamdani Criticized for Focus on 'Influencer Act' Over Governance

Nine months into his mayoral term, Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism for prioritizing promotional videos and "influencer acts" over substantive governance, according to a recent analysis. Critics argue that this focus on trivialities distracts from his administration's responsibilities in addressing critical city issues.

Recent public appearances and official statements highlight this perceived emphasis. A promotional video featuring Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who is facing domestic unrest and corruption allegations, saw the two engaging in a staged basketball game with a wastepaper bin. Mamdani's administration also released a video of him "planting an olive tree" at Gracie Mansion, though he reportedly only observed others performing the task. Other recent content includes a video promoting voter registration and a high-production clip announcing a giveaway of 70,000 Metropolitan Opera tickets.

These activities are contrasted with unfulfilled campaign promises and administrative missteps. Mamdani's pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit to New York was met with a swift retreat, as he was reminded of the U.S. not recognizing the International Criminal Court's jurisdiction. His administration's rollout of a pied-à-terre tax was also described as botched.

Further contributing to the criticism is the administration's alleged use of taxpayer dollars to fund its Office of Mass Engagement, which critics claim recruits influencers to promote positive content about Mamdani. Previous initiatives cited include a "mukbang" video to announce a settlement for fast-food workers and a hype video outside hedge-fund titan Ken Griffin’s apartment.

Critics point to several ongoing city challenges that they argue are being neglected in favor of public relations efforts. These include repeat violent offenders in the subway system, the proliferation of homeless encampments, and the underperformance of public schools, particularly for Black and Latino students. Affordability issues are also cited, with Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn ranking poorly in national rent-affordability data.

Mamdani's administration has also faced controversy over its proposed city-owned grocery stores, which have been encumbered by lawsuits and community opposition. Plans to hand over policing duties to a new Department of Community Safety have also been questioned, with critics noting the formation of only an "office" and the continued operation of the NYPD's Strategic Response Unit.

The mayor has also experienced public rebukes, including being ignored at a soldier's funeral in Queens and booed off stage at an NYPD event in Staten Island. The analysis suggests that this focus on "content creation" serves Mamdani's insulated base rather than the broader New York City populace struggling with the city's current challenges.
