New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced a hostile reception and was booed off stage Tuesday night at the NYPD's 43rd Patrol Borough National Night Out Against Crime event in Staten Island. The event, held at the Midland Beach boardwalk, drew an estimated 3,500 residents and families.
Mamdani's appearance was met with loud jeers and profanities from attendees, with some shouting for him to leave, according to social media videos. He managed to speak for less than a minute, offering brief remarks wishing Staten Islanders a "Happy Night Out Against Crime" before being escorted from the podium. Many attendees showed their disapproval by giving him a "thumbs down" as he was heckled.
The reception stood in contrast to the broader city-wide "community-building campaign" events hosted by the NYPD and city officials, which aimed to promote police-community partnerships to enhance neighborhood safety. Mamdani, however, reportedly posed for photos with some attendees before leaving the event despite the unwelcome reception.
