Mayor Zohran Mamdani declined to directly address the growing homeless encampment situated near the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in Manhattan on Monday. Responding to questions about the encampment, which has drawn complaints from locals and remains unresolved despite weeks-old 311 reports, Mamdani stated the administration's priority.
"We are focused on connecting New Yorkers to shelter and on establishing a pipeline to stable housing, not just moving New Yorkers from one place to another place," Mamdani said during an unrelated press conference in Brooklyn. He added, "To this specific encampment that you brought up, we’re going to look into the details of that."
The New York Post reported last week on the encampment located on Twelfth Avenue near West 46th Street. Under the current city policy, the Department of Homeless Services is responsible for encampment clearings after seven days of outreach, a timeline that has not been met at this location.
