Mayor Bass Defends Ghana Trip Amidst Palisades Fire Criticism

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing renewed criticism for her decision to travel to Ghana in January 2025, a period when a devastating wildfire ravaged the Palisades and surrounding areas. Amidst her re-election campaign, Bass defended her absence at a recent town hall, stating, "The problem in our very big city is that it's very difficult to leave town and not have something that happens." She suggested that even if she had been present, the outcome of the fire might not have differed significantly.

The mayor's remarks have ignited a wave of backlash on social media, with constituents expressing anger over the city's preparedness and the perceived lack of leadership during the crisis. Online commenters criticized the city's response, citing issues such as dry reservoirs, non-functional hydrants, and a lack of adequate equipment and staffing. One user on Facebook asserted, "Even if she was there she still would have let them burn it down," reflecting a sentiment of distrust in the city's leadership.

It took Bass several months to publicly acknowledge regret over the trip. In July 2025, she told Vice News, "I was asked, 'Do I regret going?' Hell yeah." She drew a parallel to personal grief, stating, "If you are out of town and your kid or a member of your family gets sick or hurt, it doesn't matter where you were or why you were there. You feel horrible." Despite this admission, her recent defense continues to deflect criticism.

The controversy surrounding her travel was exacerbated by reports that Bass's team was aware of the fire risks before her departure. She had traveled to Ghana as part of a U.S. delegation for a presidential inauguration, an event that occurred despite multiple fire weather warnings issued for Los Angeles. Bass maintains she was unaware of the severity of the potential danger, stating, "There was no way in the world I knew that the city was in danger when I left."

Upon her return, Bass questioned fire officials about the lack of an advance warning, receiving a response that Santa Ana winds are common and hurricane-force winds were not anticipated. She admitted she did not receive a direct briefing but emphasized that unusual wind conditions were not predicted by city or county officials.

Further complicating the situation, it was revealed that Bass had previously proposed budget cuts to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Although the final approved reduction was less than initially proposed, critics pointed to this as evidence of a failure to adequately support emergency services. In February 2025, Fire Chief Kristin Crowley was dismissed, with Crowley reportedly accusing city leaders of insufficient support during the fires. Bass countered by attributing issues like broken fire engines to a lack of staffing and stated that budget allocations for the fire department were delayed rather than cut due to labor negotiations.

This incident is not the first time Bass's travel has coincided with a significant emergency. She was reportedly out of town in Chicago when a large fire broke out at a cold storage facility in Boyle Heights. Political opponents have also voiced criticism, with gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton remarking, "I don't know what's wrong with Karen Bass that she seems to keep leaving the city every time something happens."
