Maye Musk Details Resilience in New Memoir, Reflecting on Raising Elon

Maye Musk, mother of Elon Musk, has detailed a life marked by resilience and determination in her new memoir, 'Timeless.' The book offers a glimpse into her early struggles as a divorcee raising three children, including the now-world's wealthiest man, Elon, and her subsequent career evolution.

Originally from Saskatchewan, Canada, Maye moved to South Africa as a child. She married Errol Musk in 1970, a relationship she describes as abusive, characterized by aggression and control. After a nine-year marriage, she divorced Errol, who she states refused to pay alimony, leaving her to raise Elon, Kimbal, and Tosca largely on her own.

Maye pursued a career in nutrition, earning a Master's degree and establishing a practice. Against a backdrop of financial instability and fear of her ex-husband's temper, she focused on nurturing her children. She recounts a period where the family was penniless, and she worried about paying rent. This challenging environment, she notes, contributed to Elon's socially awkward and introspective nature as a child, describing him as a "total bookworm."

Seeking a better environment for her children, Maye moved back to Canada in 1989. She built a successful consultancy in eating disorder advice. Meanwhile, Elon and his brother Kimbal set their sights on Silicon Valley. Starting with minimal resources, they founded a company that developed online city guides with interactive maps.

Maye played a supportive role in her sons' early ventures, assisting with tasks like laundry and shopping, and covering basic office expenses. In 1999, their business was sold for $307 million. Maye's response to this significant financial success was understated, continuing with household chores as if nothing had changed.

Elon and Kimbal eventually pursued separate paths. Kimbal became a chef and restaurateur, while Elon went on to found companies such as X.com (which became PayPal), Tesla, and SpaceX, and acquired Twitter. Maye notes that Elon remains "hyper-focused on what matters most to him," currently AI technologies, and still works long hours, which has led to health scares.

Maye Musk also built a successful career as a model. After moving to America and re-certifying as a dietician, she embraced her white hair and a new hairstyle, leading to modeling opportunities. She has appeared on magazine covers, in advertisements, and on runways, becoming a symbol for the "strong, beautiful and relevant" older woman. Her modeling career has taken her around the world, including a billboard in Times Square and invitations to events like the Met Gala.

Reflecting on her life experiences, Maye Musk's philosophy is, "Possibility doesn't dim with age, it sharpens." She is described in the review as a vibrant, resourceful, and thoughtful individual who has overcome significant adversity. The memoir, 'Timeless,' explores themes of aging, fashion, and her unique experience as the mother of a world-renowned innovator.
