Maye Musk Details Resilience in Memoir: From Financial Hardship to Global Recognition
Elon Musk's mother, Maye Musk, shares her journey of overcoming adversity, building a career, and supporting her children's ambitions in her new book 'Timeless'.
Maye Musk, mother to tech mogul Elon Musk, has detailed her life of resilience and determination in her new memoir, "Timeless." The book chronicles her experiences from facing financial struggles as a divorced mother to becoming a successful nutritionist and model, all while raising her three children: Elon, Kimbal, and Tosca.
Originally from Saskatchewan, Canada, Maye moved to South Africa as a child. She married Errol Musk in 1970 at age 22. In her memoir, she describes her marriage as volatile and unhappy, characterized by her ex-husband's aggression and control, which included physical abuse and attempts to isolate her from her family. After nine years, the divorce was finalized, with Errol reportedly appearing at Maye's flat with a knife.
Maye pursued a career in nutrition, earning a Master's degree and becoming an expert in various dietary fields. She worked to establish her practice while raising her children, often experiencing financial hardship. Seeking a better environment for her children and a chance to rebuild her life, Maye moved back to Canada. By 1989, she had developed a successful consultancy focused on eating disorders.
Meanwhile, Elon and Kimbal Musk were setting their sights on Silicon Valley. They collaborated to create online city guides with interactive maps and directions. During this period, Maye provided crucial support, assisting with laundry, shopping, and covering basic office expenses. Their company was sold in 1999 for $307 million, a success Maye met with characteristic humility, continuing with household chores as if little had changed. Her sons were then able to purchase an apartment for her in New York.
Maye's memoir also touches on the dynamics between her sons, noting that Elon and Kimbal would sometimes physically fight, requiring her intervention. She guided them toward better professional conduct for leadership roles. Kimbal pursued a career as a chef and restaurateur, while Tosca became a producer in Hollywood. Elon's path led him to co-founding online bank X.com, which evolved into PayPal, and later to establish Tesla and acquire Twitter, becoming a prominent figure in electric cars, solar power, and rocket technology.
Maye later moved to America and re-certified as a dietitian, earning respect for her expertise. Simultaneously, she embarked on a modeling career after deciding to embrace her white hair and adopt a new hairstyle. Agencies sought her out to represent the "strong, beautiful, and relevant" older woman. She has since appeared on magazine covers, in advertisements, walked fashion shows, and been featured on a billboard in Times Square. She is also a regular attendee at the Met Gala.
Reflecting on her life, Maye Musk emphasizes a philosophy of continuous possibility: "Possibility doesn't dim with age, it sharpens." At 78, she is described as vibrant, resourceful, curious, and driven, embodying a spirit of perseverance.
Maye's insights offer a perspective on aging, career, and the enduring strength required to navigate life's challenges. Her journey highlights the importance of setting goals, maintaining curiosity, and persevering through adversity.
