"Maxxing" Named Dictionary.com's 2026 Word of the Year

Americans' focus on optimization has led Dictionary.com to select "maxxing" as its 2026 Word of the Year. The term, short for maximizing, is used to convey doing something to the fullest or optimizing it as much as possible.

According to Dictionary.com, "maxxing" is "the linguistic manifestation of a culture increasingly preoccupied with getting the most out of everything." The digital media usage of the term increased nearly 19 times in August 2026 compared to the monthly average in 2025. The site also considered "affordability," "data centre," "odyssey," and "unc" as potential words of the year.

Many individuals, particularly those under 30, utilize "maxxing" on social media to document their efforts toward various forms of perfection. For instance, influencers in the fitness and wellness spheres discuss "proteinmaxxing" and "fibermaxxing," while others describe improving sleep habits as "sleepmaxxing."

The influencer Clavicular has gained a significant following by chronicling his "looksmaxxing" journey, a pursuit focused on meeting specific aesthetic criteria, with emphasis on features like jawlines, eyes, and physique.

Steve Johnson, director of lexicography for Dictionary Media Group, noted that the expanding uses of "maxxing" reveal diverse responses to the impulse for more. Some people embrace it, others exaggerate it humorously, and some use it to describe stepping away from the constant drive for improvement.

While "maxxing" has gained prominence recently, the concept has historical roots. The term appeared in the opening song of the 1990s television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, where Will Smith raps, "Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool."

Dictionary.com noted that "maxxing" can function as an adjective, adverb, noun, or verb, and is employed by various age groups, including Gen Z and Gen Alpha, to signify a strong emphasis on optimization.
